Home Town

Clitheroe (that’s up North if you were wondering)!

Local Playspot

I always consider the Tryweryn my local “playspot” - a 2-hour drive is local isn’t it?

Weapon(s) of Choice

Well, I’ve got a Mafia already for when the going gets tough and I’ll be getting my hands on a Fish in the near future and hopefully a Squashtail to!

Dan H goes big in the Fish at HPP
(4.5MB WMV)

Favourite River

I’d struggle to pick just one when I’ve paddled so many, a few of my favourites are, the Kent, Tees, Ogwen, Nevis, Etive (and Tribs of course), Coe, Guardian Angel Gorge on the Guil, sections of the Inn and I have a special place in my heart for the Zambezi!

Favourite Playspot

I don’t really have a favourite; I’m a great believer in variety being the spice of life!  Saying that, I enjoy the elbow wave on the Tryweryn, the inlet gate at HPP, most of the Zambezi and the good old Happy Eater at Teesside J

Best Canoeing Experience

Paddling out of the bottom of rapid 9 on the Zambezi, what a rush!!!  I was high on that one for a few days!

Worst Canoeing Experience

Not quite making the line (“taxi!”) on Force Falls on the Kent on Boxing Day 2003, the river was in monster flood and I caught myself on a tree branch on the lead in and knocked myself out, what happened next wasn’t pretty, ask D!  Luckily I came to and hauled myself out on the fisherman’s ladder, dripping with blood and minus my boat and paddle (have a look where the ladder is next time you run the Kent and you’ll see how high the river was), I was back in my boat the next day though!

Most Embarrassing Canoeing Experience

Swimming out of the Acid Drop at Teesside at the 1997 Peak Challenge.  I’ll never live that one down!

Significant Results

8 GCSE’s, 3 A-Levels, a degree in Chemistry, former winner of the Tryweryn Playboater/ Eskimo Sunday League, 1st in the 2002 PeakUK Challenge at Tryweryn (sport category).

I’ve not competed much in the last couple of years, I’ve discovered there’s so much more to kayaking than competing!

I’m quite keen on doing some of the extreme races around Europe next year though, we’ll have to see if time and money allow!

Keep your paddling fun!  If it becomes something else you’re doing it wrong!
