Darren "D" Broderick
Interview: Feb 2006

First things first.....
What are your current stat's (height / weight / feet)?
6", 15 stone, size 11 feet.

Have you been over-indulging during Christmas, partying or working out?
Not been doing enough boating, due to exams and trying to organise my wedding although I’ve been surfing my wave ski quite a bit.

What particular items of (HnM) kit are you using? Any feedback?
I've got a  Fish converted to C1 and a Mafia for the steep stuff.
But I can't wait to get hold of a Thruster once they become available, hint hint!!!
The Kober Carving paddles are awesome.

What I'd like to see is a bigger Squashtail style of boat for the big lads and a smaller Fish type boat for the little people.

Playboating or river running?
River running, its different every time you got out.
Paddling a new river with a group of mates is such a good feeling.

Where do you hang out mostly these days and where do you paddle most of the time?
What with there having been no rain I've got to say that most of my time over the last few months has been surfing on the North East coast.

So how was 2005-6?
It’s been a good year on the whole. I would have liked to have done more rivers in Scotland, but if it don't rain you can't really play.

Have you enjoyed being part of team HnM?
Yes it’s been very enjoyable. It's been good to watch HnM emerge as a company/brand, despite efforts by some to hinder us. I look forward to seeing what they have planned for this year. Thanks for the stickers! ;-)

Learned any new moves / paddled any new rivers recently?
Paddled the Vente Ache and Wolfs gorge in Austria in my Mafia, which I'd never done before. The Mafia really allowed me to push myself in a K1 boat (as I’ve been on my knees for the last few years) and so gave me loads of confidence.

And what have you got planned for 2006-7?
Getting married, staying married.
Oh and a trip to Canada with Dan in the summer! ;-)

Would you encourage others to get involved as a sponsored paddler?
Is it hard work? What are the pitfalls?
If you like the products that the sponsor provides and can talk to them then its well worth doing. However if you only want to be 'sponsored' then you may end up finding the products available to you hold you back.

Who's the best paddler on the HnM team?
Me of course. Truthfully DanH is a very good river/creek boater.
I'm unable to comment on the other lads on the team as I don't really know them.

Any idea who on earth this Baciare Miocome is?
Some little Italian bloke, with skinny legs!

Penultimate question: Who's the best looking (Jon or Glenn)???
Good things come in small packages so it got to be Jon.
Plus I’m bigger than the other guys and Glenn doesn't scare me!

Final question: Any last messages???
This sport is all about having fun. If you're not, don't get frustrated, go try something until you are again!

Well, thanks for that lad.
Keep up the good work and try to stay out of trouble.
